The Namesake of R.C. Jr’s Son

One of my favorite blogs is that of Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. Reading it gives me courage to live a joy-filled life, not in fear of others (Gal 1:10 ) . He and his wife, Denise, recently adopted a baby. His blog entry about the adoption and the baby’s namesake put tears in my eyes. It’s a must read. And while you’re at it, read the post just before it, “Double, Bubble, Toil and Stumble” before it on drinking in moderation.

If you’re not sick of RC yet, check out the new book “To You and Your Children: Examining the Biblical Doctrine of Covenant Succession” published by Canon Press. He wrote the foreword. His book “When You Rise Up: A Covenantal Approach to Homeschooling” is also excellent and is part of our permanent collection.

  1. Thanks Sarah.

RC Sproul Jr. writes some good articles. Maybe he writes better than he pastors his church.

I was troubled when I read his Double, Bubble, Toil and Stumble article. Some people may think RC’s article is funny. I didn’t. It seemed like a slam against weaker brethren.

In doing a little internet searching I came across some troubling articles. One site in particular has links to a number of others that reflect that RC has a serious problem with alcohol, or at least with abusing his Christian liberties. It seems to me that until RC has a better reputation he’s in no position to be mocking people who are offended by his conduct.

  2. Martha, forgive me for asking, but do I know you?
Your last name is not included, and I do not recognize your email address.
“Maybe he writes better than he pastors his church”.

I wouldn’t know. I attend Olive Street Presbyterian Church of Coatesville, PA. Can you can snag me a bulletin next time you are there and mail it to me?
What about Mr. Sproul’s post Double, Bubble, Toil and Stumble troubled you – in what way is it a slam against his weaker brother? Can explain further?
Perhaps, if you are ever in the area, you can visit and we can discuss the topic of Christian liberty over some beer that I brewed myself – and hand picked the cherries, with the help of my three year old daughter, from a local orchard for flavoring, I might add – just this past summer.

In your comments, you cite three links – one of which is so reliable that it is no longer valid – and from them you assert that he “has a serious problem with alcohol, or at least with abusing his Christian liberties.” He must be caught up in quite a public sin for you to speak of it so openly without fear of being brought up on charges of gossip, slander or bearing false witness.
I trust that you have, as a concerned sister in Christ, have spoken with him directly of your concerns. What was his reply to you?

  3. Hi Sarah Joy,

You don’t know our family either. Please forgive us if it’s a prerequisite to know you before posting on your blog. We didn’t see anything anywhere that indicated knowing you would be necessary to post.

We’ve heard a lot of complaints about abuse of Christian liberties at Saint Peter too. The fact that RC Jr has a bad reputation (and I mean a bad reputation in a lot more things than just drinking abuses) is in itself a big problem. Elders are biblically required to have a good reputation, not only within their own church, but also in their communities and spheres of influence: “And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he may not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.” 1Tim. 3:7

RC Sproul Jr’s Presbytery took seriously those things and recently defrocked RC Sproul Jr along with his entire Session.
