Little Things are Finally Coming True

One of the hardest parts of being out of town is the lack of communication. Yeah, there’s email, but it’s just not the same. So, on my last trip, Sarah and I bought two headsets, and we were using AOL Instant Messenger’s built-in voice chat. The quality was ok, but I knew there had to be something better.

Enter Skype. Skype bills itself as a “peer-to-peer telephony application”. Breaking that down, it’s a distributed tool for voice-chat over the Internet. This is what the Internet should be doing… and what I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. There is also a video plugin available, which I’ll investigate next.

I’m talking to Sarah right now. This really makes being away a little more tolerable.

Bonus points for anyone who can guess the source of the the title (without googling!)

  1. Nice title. I love Tom’s subtle humor. I miss his witty commentaries, his abstract insight and the sound of his laugh (when “funny” catches him off-guard, it sounds like milk is just about to shoot from his nose – like he’s choking on the very thought) and the smirk on his face when he is struck by the humor of irony. Me? I am the master of the obvious. I am my daughter’s mother. Hurry home, love. I’m feeling off-balance.

  2. I’m curious….Skype says that it’s free, but then I see an account balance on their screen shot (it’s in Euros). What’s the deal? Is it a free download, but then you have to pay some monthly subscription? Or am I misinterpeting something?

  3. It’s free for Skype to Skype calls. The fee is if you want to use Skype to call a regular telephone number.

  4. Why aren’t you just using your VoIP phone like Cindy and I do when I’m traveling. Oh, that’s right, you are using an inferior product and paying $5.00 more a month for it. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

  5. Of course I could have taken it, but what would my wife use, dingleberry? Two of the site guys have Vonage accounts at their apartments, and for one guy, it took months to convince his family that he still had a local number that rang in his apartment. 🙂
